Many people have heard about Invisalign® and how these clear aligners can straighten the teeth and make other adjustments, but some may think that these seemingly magic trays are too good to be true. If struggling with bite issues, crooked teeth, or gaps between the teeth, you may assume these trays are only fit for people with very minor, cosmetic issues.
However, this option can tackle many of the same problems that traditional braces can, going far beyond just generally straightening the teeth. Learn the wide-ranging list of orthodontic issues that a general dentist can use Invisalign® to address to see if this could be a suitable alternative for your unique lifestyle and dental needs.
While many people are dissatisfied with the appearance of crooked teeth or other alignment issues, individuals may delay treatment due to concerns about how they will look with braces. Invisalign® is a unique solution that allows people to achieve straighter, healthier smiles in a more camouflaged manner. During the initial consultation with a general dentist, common questions from patients involve what conditions clear aligners can treat.
Can Invisalign® fix bite issues?
Many people have issues with the way the top and bottom teeth align, which can affect the appearance of the smile, cause wear, and contribute to jaw pain and problems with the temporomandibular joint. Invisalign® can often be used to bring the jaw into proper alignment, allowing both sets of teeth to meet in the middle with only about 2 millimeters of the lower arch being covered by the top. There are four types of bite issues clear aligners can address:
Overbite: An overbite occurs when the top arch protrudes too far over the bottom teeth
Underbite: When the bottom teeth rest in front of the top teeth when a person bites down, this indicates an underbite
Crossbite: Similar to an underbite, a crossbite occurs when some of the teeth on the upper jaw sit behind teeth on the lower jaw
Open bite: People with an open bite have teeth that do not touch in the middle when biting down
Can Invisalign® fix crowding and gaps in the teeth?
Some people have teeth that are either too small or too big for the jaw, which can lead to gaps between the teeth or alternatively cause crowding. Some people may also have gaps between the two front teeth as a result of using a pacifier, sippy cup, or bottle as a toddler. Thumb sucking can also cause this issue. Clear aligners can be used to either create more space for crowded teeth or to bring gapped teeth together.
Can Invisalign® rotate crooked teeth?
Sometimes, adult teeth come in at strange angles, causing noticeably crooked teeth. Clear aligners can rotate an uneven tooth so that it is in line with the rest of the mouth. For molars, aligners can only achieve rotations of 20 degrees or less.
There are many common orthodontic issues that Invisalign® can reliably treat. A dentist can examine the situation and judge whether clear aligners are a suitable option or if the case is too complicated or severe for this alternative.
